The Shadow Lake 8 on Em-Kay

the Shadow Lake 8

Label : Em-Kay

12877 - South Parkway
12878 – Power

Source of information (and label shot) is Garage Hangover (Chas Kit submission on February 26, 2010) :
Just discovered this great 45 by the Shadow Lake 8 on Em-Kay, Both sides are rocking blues instrumentals with brief spoken bits. Both songs by M. Kent Washburn. Interestingly, someone attempted to cover the word 'Orchestra' on each side.
This is a Rite Pressing #12877/12878 which dates it to 1964 and Rite account #218, which was from Tulsa. Seems to be a rare 45, as it doesn't show up on the Rite pressing database at 45rpmrecords.com.
Both sides can be heard at the Garage Hangover site, click on the link above.

Also from Tulsa and from the same Rite account are these two records:

Laurel Mae Martin "The Queen Of The Blues"

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Laurel Mae Martin
"The Queen Of The Blues"
With The Cool Breezes

Martin 100

15095 - Cool Breeze

15096 – I’ll Be Waiting For You

Who is the Queen of blues? asked someone at Answers.com, "The World's leading Q&A site".

Bessie Smith (1894-1937 ), Dinah Washington (1924-1963), Memphis Minnie (1897-1973), Mary Ann Fisher (1923-2004) and Koko Taylor (1928-2009) were all know as Queen of the Blues at various times. Inasmuch as there can only be one Queen - it's tough to choose, and in any case very much a matter of taste." was the answer.

Hey, they forgot to mention Laurel Mae Martin. Her record was once described by a puzzled e-bay seller as "Detroit Hillbilly Soul Motown Northern Funk". Six words, only one accurate : Detroit.

These two sides are something you've never heard before. Truly amazing!

The Hard Times on Lorna

The Hard Times

Label : Lorna

23553 - Just Look
23554 - Miss Mini Lou

The shy 'Miss Mini Lou" owes its appearance (label shot & audio file) here thanks to Cees Klop, compiler in 2006 of the Volume 5 of his "Slow Boogie Rockin'" series on his Collector label [ CLCD 4493].

Rite number indicates a 1969 release. The name of the composer (D. Smith) don't help much. They are 814 D. Smiths in the BMI database and, too bad, no "Miss Mini Lou" can't be seen there, even remotely.

They were at least three other recorded groups bearing the same name around the same time, earlier actually, but I think unlikely that they were related :
  • On World Pacific, 66-67, from San Diego, California
  • On Ultimate, 1966, from Birmingham, Alabama
  • and on Gray Ant, 1966

June 'Bug' Bailey on Jo

'June Bug' Bailey

Jo Records # 2180

9339 - Lee Street Blues
9340 - Louisiana Twist

According to the Ace CD Red River Blues's booklet :

15 year old June ‘Bug’Bailey was the daughter of a woman who worked at the Pioneer Barbecue joint two doors from the Ram Studio in Greenwood Road, which Mira Smith opened in 1961. June’s mother had told Mira that her daughter could sing and when a black song writer, Joe Lewis from Alexandria brought Mira some songs, she decided to try recording one with the youngster.
'Lee Street Blues' a song about a wine-head was released on Mira’s Jo Records.

'Louisiana Twist' is in the BMI online database but credited to Joe Louis (not Joe Lewis) and it's his only song listed.

Eddy Raven's first record

Eddy Raven

Cosmo 101

CP-6351 – Ladies Man
CP-6352 - Once A Fool

1961 (October)

Eddy Raven (born Edward Garvin Futch, August 19, 1944 in Lafayette, Louisiana) charted a string of hit singles on the country music charts between 1974 and 1991.

Influenced by Cajun music, the country music sounds from popular radio broadcasts such as the Louisiana Hayride, New Orleans blues, and the new sounds of rock and roll, Raven developed his own unique sound. His songwriting abilities led to him being signed by Don Gant to a publishing deal with Acuff-Rose Music that eventually led to him moving to Nashville, Tennessee where he started recording for himself in 1974.

In the 1980s, had a string of top ten songs, including 6 that went to No. 1 on the country music charts. Those songs include "I Got Mexico" (1984); "Shine, Shine, Shine" (1987); "I'm Gonna Get You" and "Joe Knows How to Live" (both 1988); and "In a Letter to You" and "Bayou Boys" (both 1989). He also wrote The Oak Ridge Boys' 1982 single "Thank God for Kids".

For three of his teenage years, Eddy Raven lived in Southeast Georgia, in Cobbtown, Metter and Baxley. He attended Metter High School and started his musical career while living in this area. That's where he recorded the Cosmo single, in a radio studio.

It was in the school auditorium of Cobbtown, in the middle of the Georgia Tobbacco Belt halfway between Metter and Reidsville, that Eddy made his first stage appearance in 1961. He decided then and there that he would rather write and sing songs than work for Uncle Troy making flues for tobacco-curing barns in Metter.

Check out the 30 minute interview with the singer on Y-101, a local Georgia radio :
